Donor Insemination

What is Donor Insemination?

Donor insemination is a medical procedure where sperm from a donor is used to achieve pregnancy. It is typically used in cases where the intended parent(s) cannot use their own sperm due to factors such as male infertility, absence of a male partner, or genetic concerns.

Here are key aspects of the process:

1. Selection of Donor:

  • Anonymous Donor: Sperm is obtained from a sperm bank, where donors are screened for medical history, genetic conditions, and infectious diseases. Information about the donor’s characteristics and background is often provided.

  • Known Donor: The sperm donor is someone known to the recipient, such as a friend or relative, who agrees to provide sperm. As per the ART guidelines, known donors are not allowed in India.

2. Medical and Legal Considerations:

  • Screening: Both anonymous and known donors undergo extensive screening for genetic disorders, sexually transmitted infections, and overall sperm quality.

  • Legal Agreements: When using a known donor, legal agreements are often put in place to define parental rights and responsibilities.

3. Procedure:

  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): The most common method, where processed sperm is directly inserted into the uterus using a catheter, typically timed with ovulation.

  • Intracervical Insemination (ICI): Involves placing sperm at the cervix, allowing it to move into the uterus naturally. Less common than IUI.

4. Success Rates and Considerations:

  • Success rates vary depending on factors such as the recipient’s age, health, and fertility status.
  • Multiple cycles may be needed to achieve pregnancy.

5. Ethical and Emotional Aspects:

  • Recipients often undergo counseling to address emotional and ethical considerations related to using donor sperm, such as future disclosure to the child.

Donor insemination provides a valuable option for many individuals and couples looking to build their families when other methods are not feasible.
