In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Procedure

What is IVF?

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, also known as IVF is a medical technique which assists couples in getting pregnant. IVF is a type of fertility treatment where woman's eggs are combined with man's sperms outside the body (in vitro) in a laboratory dish.

The phrase "in vitro" is latin meaning  "in glass" per say.

"Fertilization" means the sperm has attached to the egg and entered inside the egg.

Natural or Unassisted Conception

What is Natural Conception?

Normally, the process of fertilization happens in woman's body.

  • Egg gets fertilized by sperm in the fallopian tube.
  • Fertilized egg travels to the uterus and gets attached to the lining of the womb.
  • It continues to grow there for next nine months.

This entire process is called natural conception or unassisted conception.

IVF Process

About IVF Process

IVF is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART). IVF is a complex process including series of procedures that can lead to a pregnancy.

  • It involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries and manually combining them with man's sperm in a culture medium in an IVF laboratory.
  • This fertilized egg (zygote) undergoes embryo culture for 2-6 days.
  • The resultant embryo is transferred into the uterus with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.

In IVF procedure, after embryo implantation, the whole pregnancy is exactly like a natural pregnancy.

IVF is the most reliable fertility treatment. It has a higher success rate compared to all other treatments. An increasing number of couples are opting for IVF all around the world.

Indications for IVF

Why is IVF performed?

People choose IVF for many reasons. Majority of them is for infertility issues. It is also indicated in couples where one partner has an existing health condition.

Few people will try IVF after other fertility methods and treatments have failed. Advanced maternal age is also an indication.
